J. George Stewart was appointed Architect of the Capitol by President Dwight Eisenhower on October 1, 1954. Notable projects under Stewart's tenure include, the extension of the East central front of the Capitol, the construction of the Dirksen Senate Office Building and the construction of the Rayburn House Office Building.
